Last season in gaining promotion to the premiership we were able to do it using at times a squad of only 18 players.
As things stand our current squad includes two goalkeepers in Brian Jensen and Diego Penny. I see no reason why we shouldn’t have a young third choice goalkeeper a goalkeeper in his teens so if the unthinkable does happen and Brian “the beast” Jensen does pick up an injury we have sufficient back up available.
In Defense we have switched between two left backs in Kalvenes and Jordan. I do think both are good players but the increased amount of pace in the premiership could see them both exposed so a young left back like Brian Easton would be an excellent addition to the squad.
At Right back our weakest position we have used Mike Duff , Rhys Williams and Graham Alexander. Alexander’s days at right back are over following his superb transformation into a defensive midfielder. His displays in our promotion shielding the back 4 have made him Burnleys answer to Makelele. The new right back Tyrone Mears looks set to take this position. It would still be nice to see another right back as back up .
Central Defence see Skipper Steven Caldwell and Clarke Carlise remain first choice. David Edgar the signing from Newcastle will be pushing for a starting position and will keep these two on there toes. Mike Duff is also a great backup for these positions.
Graham Alexanders defensive midfield position is also in my opinion requiring a back up. Dutch man Remco Van der Schaaf is yet to prove he is a consistent back up in the Championship let along the Premier league. Chris Mccann will shine in the Premiership this year along with Chris Eagles, Wade Elliott and Robbie Blake.
The One position I would like to see fillied would be a out and out left winger. Andrew Driver would be a perfect signing in this department but it remain to be seen whether hearts will allow him to leave for anything less than 5 million.
Up front Steven Fletcher and Martin Paterson are first choice but I would like to see Sheffield Wednesdays Marcus Tudgay join the clarets and with his added pace and finishing attributes will pose a lethal threat in combination with Paterson and Fletcher.
So to review the players I would like to see join Burnley before the premiership season would be -
1 – Young keeper as third choice and to play in the reserves
1 – Young back up right back
1 – Back up left back Easton fits that bill with a already reported £300k bid
1 – Back up defensive midfielder ( Hopefully Van der Schaaf )
1- Left Winger – ( Andrew Driver)
1 – Striker Marcus Tudgay
That’s six more new signings before the Stoke game but I am sure it is possible if the clarets splash the cash.
